Fivers Wander Down The Street

An interview occurs—
I get a job offer;
except well er
I’ve accepted another.

Fivers wander down the street
bouncing at my feet
when I’m in this mood.

A girl who really is
the rosiest red around—
such scent, such thorns
whose heart has she found?

Fivers wander down the street
playful at my feet
when I’m in this mood.

Three months unemployed,
and eight of them alone:
now I’m redeployed.
Has my heart a home?

Fivers wander down the street
winking at my feet
when I’m in this mood.

“Will she, won’t she
take me for her lover,
or, oh, has she
found herself another?”*

Fivers wander down the street
worrying my feet
when I’m in this mood.

*Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s a misquote, that’s the idea.
