A college friend, so an old friend, has started painting. He wanted to do so as a kid, but his school arts teacher really put him off. He’s got going now though. It’s a pity the teacher’s not around to feel shame.
He’s got decades to express. Once he’s explored across the range of styles, techniques and forms, he’ll maybe settle on one or two that really work well for him. I expect that eventually he’ll start to adapt those and other styles to create something new, as I did with my poetry.
He’s undoubtedly got something. I’m biased: beyond that he’s an old friend, he shares my love of pareidolia, although he wouldn’t call it that. It is different: I capture shapes I do not make; he creates the shapes he paints. It’ll be very interesting to see what he produces once he’s found his voice, if he’s not there yet.
