Here in Lux, indeed in most of Europe, the USA, and, I suspect, many other countries, when an emergency vehicle, such as an ambulance, puts on its blue flashing lights and plays its emergency music, other vehicles on the road get out of its way. The ambulance, etc., will ignore red lights, and break all kinds of other formal rules, so it can get the emergency sorted ASAP. Other drivers expect and deal with this. It’s all part of how to drive.
But in Beijing, I was shocked to see an ambulance, blue lights flashing, stuck in a traffic queue. The other drivers seemed to treat it as just another vehicle on the road. This wasn’t a one–off, I saw something similar in Zhengzhou. It seems Chinese drivers haven’t been taught to give way to emergency vehicles, to ambulances, etc.. This must cost lives.
