I don’t understand why President Trump decided to defund much scientific research in the US, but he did so. In consequence, he seems to be surrendering the US lead in the sciences, which means he’s giving up the benefits that science brings (in the long term). Science is the mother of technology, technology is the father of growth. Since China is second in the world in terms of science, it follows that Trump has surrendered the US dominance of science, and thus technology, in the long term, to the Chinese.
Of course, other countries have a say in this matter: the response of a number of EU countries to Trump’s unexpected surrender was to bring some of the American researchers across the Atlantic. So Trump has surrendered the long term future to Europe too.
The point is, though, that by his decision, Trump has surrendered to the Chinese (and maybe us Europeans). As a European, it means I should disinvest in the US and invest in China, in my case not financially, but emotionally, intellectually and culturally.
Of course, the world is complex, and that complexiy is neither helped by the Russian oligarchs trying to steal Ukraine’s wealth, nor Chinese support for this crime. Neither is that helped by the equally fascist, but dramatically more idiotic, Trump. Us mere mortals need to navigate the current world carefully: it’s not that I support China, it’s just that I recognise the consequences of Trump’s idiocy.
