I like London myself—to visit. I’m a country lad, brought up in an English village, where you know everybody and the pub is full of familiar faces. I’m only an hour from London (Birmingham and Cambridge) which gives me thorough access to the joys of the cities, but I find green fields and small community life good for the soul.

My favourite place to visit in the UK is the Western Highlands—the landscape is dramatic, the history is romantic, and the light is glorious—when it isn’t pelting down with rain, your car isn’t squashing idiotic sheep and the midges aren’t eating you for breakfast. Mind you, the beer is one hell of a lot better in London than in Scotland.
