before blog — me, food and the US

When I drove from New York to Dallas, I found the US cities were excellent because all kinds of foods were easily available, but the bits in between were awful. Most roadside restaurants seem to sell deep fried rubber. I survived on Denny’s omelettes, until I got so fed up with that that I just ate apples from an orchard in Virginia. Eventually, I found the Camel—a trucker’s café—in Memphis, which advertised “home cooked vegetables”. What wonderful exotica! I so stuffed my face that I felt ill for the next 500 miles!
